<div style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;">
On this day we celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany: a day when the three kings visited the baby Jesus in the manger. Thing is, those kings were only halfway through their journey. And that is how it with modern epiphanies too: when we finally have a personal epiphany we realize we have much farther to go - but in a new direction.</div>

<div style="font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 10px;">
This is will also be Vicar Tom's final Sunday here at St, Cyprian's: this week he and Alex move back to the east coast. Like most Epiphanies, this one was unplanned and unexpected: few can order up a new star that leads in a different direction: when the opportunity arises you either move on or stay put. Join us for this Jazz Mass with Stephen Prutsman on the Jazz Piano and a number of other pleasant surprises. Reception to follow.</div>

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry’s Christmas message reflects on John 3:16 in the light of God’s gift of Godself at Christmas, and describes an old poster from 1938, calling upon all Christians to care for the stranger and the refugee as though they were a member of the holy family.</div>

<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em;">
In the Third Chapter of John’s Gospel, Jesus says at one point, “God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that all who believe in him should not perish but have everlasting life.”</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em;">
For years, I’ve often thought that that passage only referred to Jesus giving his life as a sacrifice on the cross. And to be sure, that is part of what it means. But some years ago I was reading a commentary by Raymond Brown, on the Gospel of John, and Professor Brown said that that passage not only speaks of Jesus willingly giving his life on the cross, but it actually speaks of Christmas, of God giving his very self, his very son to the world, not for anything God could get out of it, but for the good and the welfare and the well-being of the world. Of us.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em;">
Someone once said, in a Christmas poem, “Love came down at Christmas.” That’s what love is. To give, and not to count the cost. To give, not for what one can get, but for what the other can receive. That’s what love is. God so loved the world, that he gave.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em;">
I realized recently how powerful that passage really is, when I saw an old poster from 1938. A poster produced by the Episcopal Church at that time, to encourage Episcopalians and other Christians, and other people of faith and good will, to do whatever they could to help Jewish refugees fleeing tyranny in Europe. To help people from all over Europe seeking refuge in America, this land of freedom. The poster depicts Mary, Joseph, and the baby Jesus. They’re fleeing persecution in Palestine, as Matthew’s Gospel says. And the poster depicting Mary, Joseph, and Jesus says in the tag line, “In the name of these refugees, help all refugees.”</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em;">
God so loved the world, that he gave, even to the point of risking his own son. And in the name of those refugees, in the name of that Jesus, help all refugees, all people who suffer, anyone who’s alone, everyone who is in need. That’s what love does.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em;">
Love came down at Christmas, because God so loved the world, that he gave.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em;">
<em style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1;">In those days, a decree went out from the Emperor Augustus, that all the world should be registered. Joseph also went from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to the city of David called Bethlehem because he was a descendent from the House of David. He went to be registered with Mary, to whom he was engaged, and who was expecting a child. While they were there, she gave birth to her first-born son, and wrapped him in bands of cloth and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.</em></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em;">
<em style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1;">Meanwhile, in that region, there were shepherds, living in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. Then the angel of the Lord stood above them. And the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and they were terrified. The angel said unto them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I am bringing you good news of great joy for all people. To you is born this day, in the City of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign. You will find the child wrapped in bands of cloth, lying in a manger.”</em></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em;">
<em style="box-sizing: border-box; line-height: 1;">And suddenly, there was with the angels a multitude of the heavenly host, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest, and peace to all people on earth.”</em></div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em;">
Have a blessed Christmas. Have a merry Christmas. Have a joyful Christmas.</div>
<div style="box-sizing: border-box; margin-bottom: 1em;">
God love you, God bless you, and may God hold us all in those almighty hands of love.</div>

<span style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: grey; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">[Episcopal News Service – Wilmington, North Carolina]</span> Three months after Hurricane Florence made landfall along the coast of North Carolina, many there are living in what feels like a liminal space. The initial chaos of the storm has passed, but the <a href="https://www.episcopalnewsservice.org/2018/12/07/presiding-bishop-prepares-for-pastoral-visits-to-east-carolina-central-gulf-coast-after-hurricanes/" rel="noopener" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">state of disorientation and uprootedness</a> has become the “new normal.”</div>

During his pastoral visit last weekend in the <a href="https://www.diocese-eastcarolina.org/" rel="nofollow" style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Diocese of East Carolina</a>, Presiding Bishop Michael Curry emphasized that he had come primarily to listen to the stories of those who had been impacted, to bear witness to the recovery work being done, and to call members of the wider Episcopal Church to remember that their siblings in East Carolina are still in need.</div>

The diocese encompasses the coastal third of North Carolina. Over the course of his two-day visit, Curry preached at a Sunday Eucharist and attended two additional gatherings that provided opportunities for community members to share their stories and time for Curry to respond pastorally.</div>

At this gathering, three individuals from around the diocese shared their experiences prior to, during and in the aftermath of Florence. The thread that was woven through each of these stories was the importance of connection and caring for one another.</div>

The Rev. Shirley Guion of St. Cyprian’s Episcopal Church in New Bern shared the history of her parish, highlighting what a rock it had been for so many people, and how heartbreaking it had been to evacuate and return to major damages in the church.</div>

Pam Banta, director of St. Anne’s Parish Day School in Jacksonville, explained how she had been unable to evacuate but was grateful to have been there amid the storm because it allowed her to begin the process of providing temporary fixes for leaks in the school before others were able to return.</div>

Hurricane Florence made landfall near Wilmington on Sept. 14 with 90 mph winds, part of a particularly active hurricane season that left a path of destruction from the Gulf Coast to coastal Virginia. Florence was blamed for the deaths of 50 people.</div>

Hurricane Michael made landfall a month later in the Florida Panhandle as an even more powerful storm with 155 mph winds, killing at least 40 people. On Dec. 9, Curry spent the morning with the congregation of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Southport. Due to damages to the congregation’s three main buildings, St. Philip’s is currently worshipping every Sunday in the Oak Island Moose Lodge.</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This week invites us to see the Way of Love as a journey
with community. In our Gospel reading we witness of Zechariah and Elizabeth who
bring infant John to the Temple to be circumcised reminds us of the importance
of our faith community to sustaining the Way of Love. Just as the community did
for John’s family, communities provide a place for discernment, sometimes
challenging us and other times affirming us. Communities celebrate and mark
important moments along the journey.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Scripture Study:
Journeying with Community (Luke 1:57-80)<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now the time came for Elizabeth to give birth, and she bore
a son. Her neighbours and relatives heard that the Lord had shown his great
mercy to her, and they rejoiced with her.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
On the eighth day they came to circumcise the child, and
they were going to name him Zechariah after his father. But his mother said,
‘No; he is to be called John.’ They said to her, ‘None of your relatives has
this name.’ Then they began motioning to his father to find out what name he
wanted to give him. He asked for a writing-tablet and wrote, ‘His name is
John.’ And all of them were amazed. Immediately his mouth was opened and his
tongue freed, and he began to speak, praising God. Fear came over all their
neighbours, and all these things were talked about throughout the entire hill
country of Judea. All who heard them pondered them and said, ‘What then will
this child become?’ For, indeed, the hand of the Lord was with him.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke
this prophecy: <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
‘Blessed be the Lord God of Israel,<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
for he has looked favourably
on his people and redeemed them. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
He has raised up a mighty saviour* for us<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
in the house of his servant
David, <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
as he spoke through the mouth of his holy prophets from of old, <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
that we would be saved from
our enemies and from the hand of all who hate us. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Thus he has shown the mercy promised to our ancestors,<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
and has remembered his holy
covenant, <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
the oath that he swore to our ancestor Abraham,<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
to grant us that we, being
rescued from the hands of our enemies,<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
might serve him without fear, in holiness and righteousness<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
before him all our days. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
for you will go before the
Lord to prepare his ways, <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
to give knowledge of salvation to his people<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
by the forgiveness of their
sins. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
By the tender mercy of our God,<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
the dawn from on high will
break upon* us, <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
to guide our feet into the way
of peace.’<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
The child grew and became strong in spirit, and he was in the
wilderness until the day he appeared publicly to Israel. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">

<b>Questions for
Reflection<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Invite your groups to discuss the following questions for
the next fifteen minutes.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The story of John the Baptist’s birth suggests that this
journey of the Way of Love is best done and sustained in the context of our
faith community. Zechariah’s song joins Mary’s voice in proclaiming the coming
of a savior. The final verse in this passage “he grew and became strong” is
echoed later in Luke about Jesus. Both reflect the reality that we grow in
faith through the support of community.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
• Recall the following from the reading:<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
-Elizabeth’s neighbors rejoiced with her<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
-On the eighth day, they circumcised him<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
-They asked the father what he wanted to name the child<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
-They pondered Zechariah’s words<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Which moment most resonates with your own experience?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
What role was community playing in your life?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
• What was the role of the members of the community in this
story, especially in the lives of Elizabeth, Zechariah, and John?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
• How does your community celebrate joy together? How does
your community support others in their joy?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
• New phases of life may come unexpectedly. How does your
community support those entering into a new phase of life, like parenthood,
graduation, retirement, or a call to a new ministry?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
• Who in your faith community has a prophetic voice?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
• How are you as a faith community proclaiming the arrival
of the Kingdom of God?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Stories of God in
Community<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Zechariah was in for a surprise when he was struck dumb by
an angel, and the community was in for a surprise when Zechariah was able to
speak again. Surely this story was repeated over and over again, as Luke tells
us the community “pondered” what sort of person this John would become.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
While the stories your community ponders are probably not as
drama-filled as the Gospel story, what are the stories this community tells
about how God is working in their midst? How do these stories shape how this
community understands itself? <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Where has God has
shown up within your community? <o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Feel free to ponder questions like these: <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
• Where have you heard God speaking in our church or
ministry?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
• When have you felt yourself growing closer to God in this
church community?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
• When have you experienced God’s love for you here? When
have you felt yourself loving God in the context of this community?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Closing Prayer<o:p></o:p></b></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

Merciful God of peace, your word, spoken by the prophets,
restores your people’s life and hope: Fill our hearts with the joy of your
saving grace, that we may hold fast to your great goodness and proclaim your

<span class="s1" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Known as COP24, the United Nations Climate Change Conference is an annual intergovernmental meeting to focus on global dialogue and action around the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. This conference produced the 1997 Kyoto Protocol and the 2015 Paris Agreement, which serves as the current basis for global standards on climate action and lowering carbon emissions. </span></div>
<div class="p1" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #393939; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; letter-spacing: -0.36px; margin-bottom: 1em;">
<span class="s1" style="box-sizing: border-box;">Called by Presiding Bishop Curry and led by Bishop Marc Andrus of the Diocese of California, the COP24 delegation will advocate for the environmental priorities named at the Episcopal Church’s 79</span><span class="s3" style="box-sizing: border-box;"><span style="box-sizing: border-box; font-size: 13.5px; line-height: 0; position: relative; top: -0.4em; vertical-align: baseline;">th</span></span><span class="s1" style="box-sizing: border-box;"> General Convention and promote the Church’s ministries and activities to address ecojustice in both United Nations and public events.</span></div>
<div class="p1" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #393939; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; letter-spacing: -0.36px; margin-bottom: 1em;">
<span class="s1" style="box-sizing: border-box;">“What I have found in participating in the United Nations climate summits from Paris onwards is that the thousands of national representatives from virtually every country on Earth are also local climate activists. These remarkable COP representatives are updating the adage from the 1970s, ‘think globally and act locally’ to be ‘think and act globally and locally’,” said Andrus. “Thinking and acting, globally and locally is what we in The Episcopal Church are about. At General Convention 79 in Austin we passed 19 pieces of environmentally-related resolutions, and we also heard compelling stories of local action. Former Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams once said, ‘It takes a global body to confront global problems.’ The Episcopal Church is a global body doing climate and environmental work at the world and the local levels.” </span></div>
<div class="p1" style="background-color: white; box-sizing: border-box; color: #393939; font-family: "Open Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; letter-spacing: -0.36px; margin-bottom: 1em;">
<span class="s1" style="box-sizing: border-box;">The delegation will bring the voice and perspective from Episcopalians around the globe to the diplomatic community gathering in Katowice. It will also coordinate with Anglican Communion, interfaith and civil society partners in their presence at the conference. </span></div>

<span class="s1" style="box-sizing: border-box;">“Resolutions coming out of the 79th General Convention have given the Episcopal Church’s Office of Government Relations additional tools to advocate for care of creation – from allowing us to be engaged around advocacy for our earth’s oceans to recognizing the need to address carbon emissions,” said Rebecca Linder Blachly, Director, Office of Government Relations. “We look forward to partnering with organizations and governments around the world to work for an earth that will sustain us for generations to come.” </span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidgV2Nk9s9xvmgA_STRY-1w2WcP56qc5iul2WFeiZCJd6Tp4Q_g3P7dPMW0Jp3kP2o3bHsrDWyIeSig4mBMAB9_oqnjk5fCh5cm-dt9FoiHFwU5VTmzzFD62OM0-WgwzIE_fTArBAl_iI/s1600/WHY+RELIGION.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="327" data-original-width="327" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEidgV2Nk9s9xvmgA_STRY-1w2WcP56qc5iul2WFeiZCJd6Tp4Q_g3P7dPMW0Jp3kP2o3bHsrDWyIeSig4mBMAB9_oqnjk5fCh5cm-dt9FoiHFwU5VTmzzFD62OM0-WgwzIE_fTArBAl_iI/s320/WHY+RELIGION.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="color: #403f42; font-family: Arial; font-size: 16px;">
<br /></div>
<div style="color: #403f42; font-family: Arial; font-size: 16px;">
A rare lung disease killed Elaine Pagels's 6-year-old son, and then about a year later her husband fell to his death while mountain climbing. After that Job-like run of tragedies, no one would have blamed Pagels if she had decided to "curse God and die."</div>
<br style="color: #403f42; font-family: Arial; font-size: 16px;" />
<div style="color: #403f42; font-family: Arial; font-size: 16px;">
But she held on. Through rage and terror and despair so overwhelming that it made her faint, she held on.</div>
<div style="color: #403f42; font-family: Arial; font-size: 16px;">
"I had to look into that darkness," she says at the opening of her new memoir, "Why Religion?" "I could not continue to live fully while refusing to recall what happened."</div>
<br style="color: #403f42; font-family: Arial; font-size: 16px;" />
<div style="color: #403f42; font-family: Arial; font-size: 16px;">
Pagels acknowledges that "no one escapes terrible loss," but as the country's most popular historian of religion, she brings a unique reservoir of spiritual wisdom to bear on the thousand natural shocks that flesh is heir to. </div>

<span style="font-family: "times new roman", times, baskerville, georgia, serif;">[November 1, 2018] Forward Movement, along with partners from across the Episcopal Church, invites all Episcopalians to participate in the Good Book Club, a church-wide Bible reading initiative. The Good Book Club will focus on Paul’s Letter to the Romans, with participants reading a section of scripture each day during the Epiphany season, starting on January 7, 2019.<br /> <br /> “When we commit ourselves to reading God’s Word, we open ourselves to the opportunity for transformation,” said Richelle Thompson, deputy director and managing editor of Forward Movement. “Although Paul wrote this letter to the Romans, the message of salvation and redemption through the risen Christ is one we all need to hear and embrace today.”<br /><br />The Good Book Club kicked off during Lent and Easter of 2018, with tens of thousands of Episcopalians reading the Gospel of Luke and the Book of Acts. Survey results from participants showed a hunger and desire to continue the initiative and provide more opportunities for people to read and discuss scripture together. Romans was the first choice of participants for the next Good Book Club.<br /><br />Presiding Bishop Michael B. Curry supports and encourages individuals and congregations to join the Good Book Club as a way to engage in “Learn,” one of the seven Way of Love practices for a Jesus-centered life. <br /> <br />Several organizations are partnering with Forward Movement in the Good Book Club, including the United Thank Offering, Forma, Episcopal Church Women, and <em>The Living Church</em>. Partner organizations are creating resources or encouraging their constituents to take part in the effort.<br /> <br />ChurchNext, a ministry of Forward Movement, will offer two six-week live Bible studies, one in English led by the Rev. Jay Sidebotham, author of <em>Conversations with Scripture: Romans</em> and director of RenewalWorks, and one in Spanish, led by the Rev. <p dir="ltr"><br>
<u>Everyone</u> may begin to experience health effects, and members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects. Smoke from wildfires and structure fires can affect health: eye and throat irritation, coughing, and difficulty breathing.</p>
<p dir="ltr">If you can see, taste, or feel smoke, you should immediately avoid or minimize outdoor activities, or travel to a location not affected by smoke, if you can.  This is especially important if you have health concerns, are elderly, pregnant, or have a child in your care.</p>
<p dir="ltr">Please follow the following tips to protect yourself and your loved ones.  Active children and adults, and people with heart disease or respiratory disease such as asthma, should avoid prolonged outdoor activity.  Masks are not a substitute for staying indoors.  Masks such as the N-95 are not effective for untrained users and may be dangerous for people with lung or heart conditions.  N-95 masks may be helpful for people who must work outdoors if properly fitted. Employees should work with their employers for direction on when/how to use N-95 masks. </p>
<p dir="ltr">Contact your health care provider if you experience the following symptoms:</p>
<p dir="ltr">• Repeated coughing</p>
<p dir="ltr">• Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing</p>
<p dir="ltr">• Wheezing</p>
<p dir="ltr">• Chest tightness or pain</p>
<p dir="ltr">• Palpitations</p>
<p dir="ltr">• Nausea or unusual fatigue</p>
<p dir="ltr">• Lightheadedness</p>
<p dir="ltr">As always, if you or someone you know is experiencing a life-threatening emergency, call 911.</p>

Pat says, “Icon painting is not as difficult as you would think. It is more of a meditation and prayer process of communion with the angel or saint. It is a work from the heart and soul and no matter what your technical skill level, if you make the heart connection, the icon will breathe a blessing on all who see it.”</div>

We’re always looking for artists from our community to exhibit their work in our Sanctuary Gallery. Shows of new work run for 60 to 90 days and may fill part or all of the Sanctuary or other display spaces here. Typically each exhibit includes promotion in our online and print communications as well as a “Meet the Artist” Reception. All works must be appropriate for viewing in a community center which is used by a diverse group of people.</div>

<span style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: grey; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">[Episcopal News Service]</span> Presiding Bishop Michael Curry has collected five of his most notable sermons, including his royal wedding sermon, in a book that <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Power-Love-Sermons-reflections-inspire/dp/0525542892/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1540218367&sr=8-1&keywords=power+love+michael+curry" rel="nofollow" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">will be released on Oct. 30</a>.</div>

“The Power of Love” takes its title from the theme of Curry’s May 19 sermon for Prince Harry’s and Meghan Markle’s wedding, 13 minutes of preaching that <a href="https://www.episcopalnewsservice.org/2018/05/19/royal-wedding-preacher-presiding-bishop-michael-curry-shares-his-love-of-jesus-with-the-world/" rel="noopener" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">elevated Curry to worldwide renown</a>, though the five sermons span his three years as head of the Episcopal Church. Three of the sermons are from July, when he preached during the church’s 79th General Convention in Austin, Texas, and the fifth is his 2015 installation sermon at Washington National Cathedral.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Hardcover copies of “The Power of Love: Sermons, Reflections & Wisdom to Uplift and Inspire” will sell for $20. It is being published in the United States by Avery, an imprint of Penguin Random House, which plans to send a courtesy copy to each diocese of the Episcopal Church.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Curry told Episcopal News Service in an emailed statement that he began talking with the publisher before General Convention about turning his royal wedding sermon into a book. The publisher later asked if Curry had more material, so he suggested the three sermons from General Convention: at opening Eucharist on July 5, the revival on July 7 and the prayer service July 8 outside the Hutto Detention Center in Taylor, Texas.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“To be honest, I wasn’t thinking about including those sermons in a book, but when the publisher saw them we all realized that they would take the message of the love of Jesus deeper and apply it to life,” Curry said. “I hope and pray that this message of the way of love, which is the way of Jesus, can be a message for our world at this time.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Curry is due in London at the end of this month for the book launch.</div>

Penguin Random House touts the 112-page book as Curry’s royal wedding sermon and “four of his favorite sermons on the themes of love and social justice.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“The world has met Bishop Curry and has been moved by his riveting, hopeful, and deceptively simple message: love and acceptance are what we need in these strange times,” the publisher <a href="https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/604756/the-power-of-love-by-bishop-michael-curry/9780525542896/" rel="nofollow" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">says in its online description</a>.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The presiding bishop isn’t new to the book world. His 2012 sermon at General Convention generated plenty of attention within and outside the church and led to his 2013 book, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Crazy-Christians-Call-Follow-Jesus/dp/0819228850/ref=pd_lpo_sbs_14_t_0?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=9DXSNNP5CH2VH4SZNWFX" rel="nofollow" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">“Crazy Christians.”</a> A follow-up, <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Songs-Grandma-Sang-Michael-Curry/dp/0819229938/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1540235354&sr=1-1&keywords=songs+my+grandma+sang" rel="nofollow" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">“Songs My Grandma Sang,”</a>focused on his faith upbringing and was released in June 2015, the month he was elected the 27<span style="border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; position: relative; top: -0.5em; vertical-align: baseline;">th</span> presiding bishop of the Episcopal Church, the church’s first African-American leader.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Curry’s past acclaim, however, offered no precedent for the intense global buzz and<a href="https://www.episcopalnewsservice.org/2018/05/21/presiding-bishops-royal-wedding-sermon-on-love-draws-global-praise-boosts-episcopal-evangelism/" rel="noopener" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank"> widespread praise he received</a> for his royal wedding sermon. For a week afterward, Curry was interviewed or profiled by <a href="https://www.episcopalnewsservice.org/2018/06/01/after-royal-wedding-media-blitz-presiding-bishop-spurs-episcopalians-to-spread-message-of-jesus-love/" rel="noopener" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">seemingly every major media outlet</a>, from the BBC to ABC’s “The View” to the celebrity gossip site TMZ.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In the introduction to “The Power of Love,” Curry describes how he received the invitation to preach at the royal wedding and how he approached the task of crafting a sermon that would be heard by a billion or more people around the world. He emphasizes, as he did in his post-wedding interviews, that his focus was always on the young couple and their example of love.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“The miracle is that we all got to experience that love,” Curry writes. “We witnessed the love of these two people. We witnessed something bigger, the source – God – while we were watching. For a while, this powerful love brought us all together. … Whatever sermon I actually preached was only an attempt to find words for that.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Video and text of the May 19 sermon <a href="https://www.episcopalnewsservice.org/2018/05/19/video-text-presiding-bishops-royal-wedding-sermon/" rel="noopener" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">are here</a>. The text was “edited lightly so that it is more suitable for reading,” Curry notes in the book’s introduction.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Curry and thousands of other Episcopalians gathered in Austin for General Convention just six weeks after the royal wedding sermon. The General Convention sermons expanded Curry’s message about the power of God’s love.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“They actually went deeper on the way of love as the way of Jesus and the way to real life,” Curry told ENS. For the book, he decided they “would be the right sermons to talk about what it means to love God and to love your neighbor.”</div>

Presiding Bishop Michael Curry introduces The Way of Love during his sermon July 5 at the opening Eucharist of the 79th General Convention in Austin, Texas, in this image taken from a Episcopal Church video of the sermon.</div>

The book’s second sermon, from the opening Eucharist at General Convention, is titled “Living the Way of Love.” At that July 5 service, Curry <a href="https://www.episcopalnewsservice.org/2018/07/05/presiding-bishop-urges-episcopalians-to-embrace-way-of-love-for-spiritual-growth/" rel="noopener" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">described seven practices</a> to help Episcopalians lead a Jesus-centered life as he unveiled the Way of Love as a churchwide rule of life. Video and text of that sermon <a href="https://www.episcopalnewsservice.org/2018/07/06/79th-general-convention-july-5-sermon-by-presiding-bishop-michael-curry/" rel="noopener" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">are here</a>.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
It is followed by “The Good Life” from the Austin revival. Curry <a href="https://www.episcopalnewsservice.org/2018/07/07/presiding-bishop-preaches-god-is-love-and-gives-life-message-during-austin-revival/" rel="noopener" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">preached for nearly 45 minutes</a> on July 7 to more than 2,000 people in the Palmer Center, with thousands more watching online video feeds of the service.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“God is love. And guess what, that’s the reason we are here,” Curry said. Video and text of that sermon<a href="https://www.episcopalchurch.org/posts/publicaffairs/79th-general-convention-episcopal-church-july-7-revival-sermon-presiding-bishop" rel="nofollow" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank"> are here</a>.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The third sermon during General Convention, titled “Love Your Neighbor,” was part of an off-site prayer service July 8 at a detention facility for women, including immigrant detainees. About a thousand Episcopalians <a href="https://www.episcopalnewsservice.org/2018/07/08/episcopalians-gather-in-public-witness-outside-immigrant-detention-center/" rel="noopener" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">joined the service in public witness</a> to federal immigration policies that had separated families.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“We come in love,” Curry told the crowd. “I would submit that the teachings of Jesus to love God and love our neighbor is at the core and the heart of what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.” Video and text of that sermon <a href="https://www.episcopalchurch.org/posts/publicaffairs/presiding-bishop-michael-curry-preaches-hutto-detention-center" rel="nofollow" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">are here</a>.</div>

The book closes with “Welcome to the Movement,” <a href="https://www.episcopalnewsservice.org/2015/11/01/curry-installed-at-27th-presiding-bishop-and-episcopal-church-primate/" rel="noopener" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">Curry’s installation sermon</a> on Nov. 1, 2015. [Episcopal News Service] San Francisco this week has become the epicenter of the movement in the United States to take greater action against climate change, and the Diocese of California is playing a prominent role in the upcoming three-day Global Climate Action Summit that is spearheaded by California Gov. Jerry Brown.</div>

Faith “teaches you that there’s something beyond the human. There’s something beyond human culture and human interests. … It’s important because we have such an outsized impact on the world,” Young said. “It’s important for us to be conscious of that and really see ourselves as protectors of the world.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The cathedral’s capacity is about 2,000 people, but it rarely reaches that many except on Christmas and Easter, Young said. He isn’t sure how many will attend on Sept. 12 but expects a full crowd at the 4 p.m. service, which is described as a Multi-Faith Service of Wondering and Commitment.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Michael Curry and the Dalai Lama each will contribute remarks at the service by video. House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-California, is scheduled to speak, as is Patricia Espinosa Cantello, executive secretary of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. Brown and Lt. Gov. Gavin Newsom have said they will attend.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The service also will highlight faith-based efforts around the world to care for the planet, including the several related <a href="https://www.episcopalnewsservice.org/2018/07/13/general-convention-reinforces-its-creation-care-stance/" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;">resolutions</a> passed in July by the Episcopal Church’s 79th General Convention.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The 2015 Paris Agreement, which sought voluntary limits on countries’ carbon emissions, has been a key rallying point, especially since President Donald Trump announced in 2017 that he would <a href="https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-40127326" rel="nofollow" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">withdraw</a> the United States from the agreement, saying it put U.S. economy at a global disadvantage.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The Episcopal Church has been involved in the We Are Still In movement, in which cities, states, companies, faith organizations and other groups have pledged to maintain the commitments of the Paris Agreement even if the U.S. government won’t. Resolution A018 specifically encourages Episcopalians to participate in that movement.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
The Episcopal Church should “set an example, in the spirit of the Paris Climate Accord, by making intentional decisions about living lightly and gently on God’s good earth, for example, through energy conservation, renewable energy, sustainable food practices and gardening,” the <a href="https://www.vbinder.net/resolutions/A018?house=hb&lang=en" rel="nofollow" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">resolution</a> says.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Care of creation has been identified as one of three top priorities of the Episcopal Church, along with evangelism and racial reconciliation, during Curry’s tenure as presiding bishop, and General Convention’s numerous resolutions addressing <a href="https://www.episcopalarchives.org/cgi-bin/acts/acts_topic_search.pl?topic=Environment" rel="nofollow" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">environmental stewardship</a>date back decades.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Andrus has been at the forefront of that advocacy and has regularly led delegations on behalf of the presiding bishop to United Nations gatherings on climate change. The next U.N. Climate Change Conference, known by the shorthand COP24, will be held this December in Poland.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“This summer the Episcopal Church took a historic step and committed itself through multiple resolutions to keeping the Paris Agreement,” Andrus said, adding that Episcopalians are part of “a great movement of faith people” fighting for action against climate change.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">

<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Andrus recalls speaking to Brown while both were attending the COP23 event last year in Bonn, Germany. The governor shared with Andrus his belief that “faith is important to justice work, as a foundation to climate action specifically,” and when Brown mentioned holding a multi-faith service to kick off his Global Climate Action Summit, Andrus suggested Grace Cathedral.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Since then, Andrus, the diocese, Interfaith Power & Light and GreenFaith have been working with Young’s staff at the cathedral to plan the service, as well as for hosting 20 <a href="http://diocal.org/global-climate-action-summit-faith-rooted-affiliated-workshops" rel="nofollow" style="background-color: transparent; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #337298; font: inherit; margin: 0px; padding: 0px; text-decoration-line: none; touch-action: manipulation; vertical-align: baseline;" target="_blank">workshops</a> this week that are affiliated with the summit, which will be based at San Francisco’s Moscone Center.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Grace Cathedral also has become a hub for environmentally themed artwork thanks to Sukey Bryan, the cathedral’s artist in residence. She used a construction wall as a canvas to depict a river. Fire sculptures and tile work featuring ocean waves can be found around the building. Parishioners entering the cathedral are greeted by Bryan’s 70-foot banners featuring oak trees, and a giant planet Earth hangs from the cathedral’s front window.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“It’s fantastic,” Andrus said of Bryan’s work. “Just beautiful.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Each year, the cathedral picks a different theme for its artist in residence, and this year’s theme was “Truths.”</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“Climate change was one of the big truths we wanted to talk about through this year,” Young said.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
He added that he is a surfer and has seen firsthand the impact of a changing climate on the ocean water where he surfs. As water levels rise, he has been told the road he takes to get to the ocean someday will disappear.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
“I think there’s a sense of hopelessness when it comes to the climate. There’s a sense that nothing we do will matter,” Young said, especially with the federal government no longer behind a global solution.</div>
<div style="background-color: white; border: 0px; box-sizing: inherit; color: #292b2c; font-family: "PT Sans", sans-serif; font-size: 18px; font-stretch: inherit; font-variant-east-asian: inherit; font-variant-numeric: inherit; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-top: 10px; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
But he hopes this week’s summit and the Sept. 12 service at the cathedral will bolster people’s spirits and encourage them to work toward practical outcomes. “I really believe that when you gather people together to work on a problem, novel solutions come up,” he said.</div>

<span style="font-family: "Minion Pro"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-ansi-language: EN-US;">The imagery of the ancient Kabbalists is instructive here. They believed that light is imprisoned in the gross matter of the world. And that would mean that when the painter “gets it right,” that light is seen and effectively freed; a piece of the world is redeemed by the painting! The painter has seen beyond the initial beauty into the primal light that is its source. </span><span lang="HE" style="font-family: "Minion Pro"; font-size: 14.0pt; mso-bidi-font-family: "Minion Pro"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Minion Pro";"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
